Engine Options
The VW Atlas is offered with two engine choices: A 235 hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder or a 276 hp 3.6-liter V6. Regular front-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission come standard with both engines, but VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive is available across the board.
The smaller engine boosts the Atlas off the line and around town with a fair amount of enthusiasm, thanks to the 258 lb-ft of torque. The transmission delivers smooth shifts with the 4-cylinder featured in the SE, SE with Technology, and SEL trims.
The V6, with 266 lb-ft of torque, is available on the SE with Technology and SEL trims and is standard equipment for the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line. The R-Line trims also come standard with AWD. You’ll be ready to tow up to 2,000 lbs with the 4-cylinder or when properly equipped, 5,000 lbs with the V6.
Ride and Handling
Because the VW Atlas in Albuquerque, NM is a pretty large SUV, it can be challenging to park and maneuver in tight spaces. However, in all other ways, you’ll be impressed with its driving dynamics. The responsive steering is nicely weighted, the brakes provide excellent stopping power, and the body feels stable through turns, with minimal lean. The suspension absorbs jolts and dips comfortably, especially in models with the 18-inch wheels. Available 20- and 21-inch wheels transfer more bumps through the cabin on rough surfaces, but the ride quality is still acceptable.

Styling inside the 2022 Atlas is uncluttered and straightforward, giving it a premium vibe. There’s seating for seven, and the second and third rows offer generous space (best in class) thanks to the vehicle’s long wheelbase. You’ll get 20.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seats, which expands to 55.5 ft3 with the third row folded, and a massive 96.8 ft3 with both rows folded. Comparatively speaking, these are excellent numbers. The Atlas Cross Sport is a terrific substitute that keeps about the same overall cargo space, if you have no use for a third row.
2022 VW Atlas Tech
The new Atlas is available with a 6.5- or an 8-inch touchscreen. Both run VW’s MIB2 infotainment system, which is easy to manipulate with simple menus, quick responses, and crisp graphics. The displays are complemented by well-placed knobs and buttons for the climate and audio controls, making it easy to adjust the settings while driving.
The outstanding VW Digital Cockpit is a great addition now featured in all trim levels. It’s a digital gauge cluster that can be reconfigured to show as little or as much information (including a navigation view with the map and route) as you’d like. Standard infotainment features include Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, a six-speaker stereo, and two USB-C ports upfront. Keyless entry and push-button start also come included as standard.
Safety Features
You’ll enjoy peace of mind with every drive in your new VW Atlas. All models come equipped with standard driver assistance features such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, forward auto emergency braking, and rain-sensing wipers. Of course, more features are added at each trim level.
The NHTSA awarded the 2022 Atlas with an overall safety rating of five out of five stars, and the IIHS gave the Atlas “Good” crash ratings and headlight ratings.
